About SAFE Schools Fund
Created in the aftermath of the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy, this fund was designed to raise private money for security upgrades in our local schools. With current Federal and State budget restraints, our schools are already doing all they can to keep up with ever changing technology, support student needs, hire, train, and retain skilled teachers, and keep our aging schools up and running. We decided to start this fund to help support those tight budgets, and have been fundraising to put private donations towards the safety and security of our local students.
The first project for the fund was to provide a security camera, security doors, and an intercom system at the front entrances of our seven elementary schools and two middle schools, and two high schools. In addition, our long term goal is to continue to raise funds and provide a resource for all of our local schools to request funds for different security projects on their campuses. Initially, we had estimated a need of $50,000 to meet our first goal outfitting each school with their front door security system. For this project, we raised approximately $50,000, and completed that first project before the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
Our second phase for the SAFE Schools Fund is to outfit all 90 School Buses which also includes the Band Buses, Special Needs Buses, and Activity Buses . This is a HUGE project costing close to $175,000, but is an important one. We are working with a company called Angel Trax, and they have designed a security system for each bus which would include 3 cameras installed in each bus-one in the back facing forward, one in the front facing the door, and one in the front facing back. They would also include a DVR System for each bus to record all activity. We are excited to work with such a great company to provide the security needs for all the students that ride buses. All students in our county ride those buses whether through daily transportation, traveling with their sports teams, or going on field trips. As parents, it gives us peace of mind knowing that there will protection for the students on the buses from bullying, misbehaving students, and most importantly making it easier for the drivers to do their job. As the SAFE Schools Fund, we are hoping to raise a third of that money, and are working with the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County School Board along with our County Commissioners to hopefully help provide the rest.
So, how can you help? As small business owners ourselves, we understand the difficulty and frequency of being asked to contribute. However, we also believe that each business and individual in our community has a unique ability to lend a helping hand, and are open to ideas and excited to talk with you about it. In addition to monetary donations, your assistance with fundraisers, man power for solicitation, business connections for security ideas, networking, and good old fashioned word of mouth support would be appreciated. As the old saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”, it will take our community to secure our schools buses.
As you can see, this is an important and heartfelt endeavor for us as the parents of three school age girls, and we hope that you share our sense of community and support for our local children, our teachers, and our schools. Every person in our community has a connection to our schools in some way, whether through the students, teachers, or staff members.
